2004 Mustang Cobra Exterior Color Options
The 2004 SVT Cobra was the last and most refined of the supercharged New Edge Snakes, and to this day “Terminator” owners can rattle off their car’s color and production count like a badge of honor. That is because 2004 was a short model year, the palette was tight, and some of these shades left the factory in very small numbers. Whether you own one, you are hunting for one, or you just love spotting some of them in the field as we did at Carlisle Ford Nationals, here is the complete rundown of all eight factory Mustang Cobra colors.
A quick note before we dive in. The 2004 Cobra dropped a few 2003 colors (Sonic Blue, Dark Shadow Gray, and Zinc Yellow) and added three fresh ones (Competition Orange, Screaming Yellow, and the legendary Mystichrome). So if you see a 2004 listed in Sonic Blue, somebody mislabeled it.
Exterior Color Options
Ebony (Black) (Paint Code UA)
The default Terminator. Ebony was the most popular choice by a wide margin, and it remains the look most people picture when they think of a menacing supercharged Snake. It hides the aggressive body lines just enough to look sinister, then explodes when the supercharger spools. If you want the classic Terminator silhouette, this is it. If you’re a true Mustang enthusiast, you will instantly think of the infamous Snakebite Cobra video that made its rounds on the internet before social media was a thing. Back then, I watched this video countless times on YouTube and Streetfire!
Competition Orange (Paint Code CY)
New for 2004 and impossible to ignore. Competition Orange brought a loud, race-inspired attitude to the Cobra lineup, and it pairs beautifully with the black wheels and dark accents. It is also one of the rarest standard colors of the year. The convertible version is especially scarce, with just 72 built, making an orange Terminator drop-top one of the toughest standard configurations to track down.
Mystichrome (Paint Code G6)
The crown jewel. Mystichrome was a $3,650 appearance package that paid homage to the 1996 Mystic Cobra, and it is the color that stops crowds at every single show. The ChromaFlair paint shifts from topaz green to cobalt blue to royal purple and finally to deep onyx black as you walk around the car. SVT did not stop at the bodywork either. The package added color-shifting leather inserts on the seats and steering wheel, plus chromed 17-inch SVT wheels. Only 1,010 Mystichrome Cobras were built, 515 coupes and 495 convertibles, and they are among the most collectible factory Mustangs ever produced.
Oxford White (Paint Code Z1)
Crisp, timeless, and a perfect canvas for the Cobra’s snake badging and red brake calipers. Oxford White has a clean motorsport feel to it and tends to look factory fresh decades later. It is one of the more reserved Terminators on the registry, with fewer than 450 built.
Redfire Metallic (Paint Code G2)
Where Torch Red is bright and flat, Redfire is deep and layered. This metallic shifts between a rich candy red and a darker burgundy depending on the sun, and it is a favorite among owners who want something with more depth than a standard red. It is one of the better looking Terminator colors in person, especially after a fresh detail.
Screaming Yellow (Paint Code D6)
Retina burning is the phrase most owners use, and they are not wrong. Screaming Yellow replaced 2003’s Zinc Yellow and turned the brightness up even further. It is the kind of color that owns a show field from across the lot, and it has a devoted following among enthusiasts who want maximum visibility.
Silver Metallic (Paint Code YN)
A clean, understated finish that reads almost stealth in the right light. Silver Metallic was the second most produced color of the year, which makes it relatively easy to find but still sharp at any show. It also does a great job showing off the Cobra’s contours without shouting.
Torch Red (Paint Code D3)
A bright, punchy red that has been a Mustang staple for years. On the Terminator, it gives the car a lively, energetic presence without crossing into custom territory. Torch Red sits right in the sweet spot of being recognizable, sought after, and not overly common.
How to Find Your Cobra’s Paint Code
If you own a 2004 Cobra and want to confirm your exact color for touch up paint or a repaint, open the driver’s door and look at the certification label on the door jamb. The paint code is listed there, usually next to a heading like “EXT PNT.” Match that two-character code to the list above and you will know precisely which factory shade your Snake wears.
Which 2004 Cobra Color Is the Rarest?
By the numbers, Competition Orange is the rarest standard color overall at just 353 units, and the Competition Orange convertible is the single hardest standard build to find, with only 72 made. Mystichrome gets all the attention for its wow factor, and rightfully so, but its 1,010 total run actually makes it more common than several of the standard colors. If outright scarcity is what you chase, the orange and white cars deserve a serious look.
No matter which shade speaks to you, every 2004 Cobra is a piece of Mustang history, the final supercharged send off for the New Edge platform before the S197 era began. If you own a 2004 SVT Cobra, feel free to drop a comment below and share yours with us!
