Dark Horse SC Horsepower and Engine

The Dark Horse SC makes 795 hp at 7,200 rpm and 660 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. That is 35 hp and 35 lb-ft more than the last Shelby GT500, which was rated at 760 hp and 625 lb-ft.

The engine is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 related to the one in the Mustang GTD, which is rated at 815 hp. Ford says a single technician hand-assembles each SC engine at its Dearborn Engine Plant.

Power goes to the rear wheels through a Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and a Torsen limited-slip differential. There is no manual option.

Dark Horse SC 0-60, Quarter Mile and Top Speed

MotorTrend’s instrumented test, published in October 2026, ran the Dark Horse SC from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. That is 0.7 seconds quicker than MotorTrend’s result for the 2020 Shelby GT500, even though the SC weighs about 51 lb more.

Quarter-mile times quoted in early first drives were not formal instrumented tests. We track those in our review roundup.

Dark Horse SC FAQ

Is the Dark Horse SC replacing the GT500?

In practice, yes. It is Ford’s supercharged successor to the Shelby GT500, with more power and quicker test times. It does not carry the Shelby name because the Carroll Shelby licensing deal with Ford has expired, according to The Drive. Shelby American still builds its own Shelby-branded Fords.

What is the difference between the Dark Horse and the Dark Horse SC?

The standard Dark Horse uses a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 rated at 500 hp and offers a manual transmission. The SC uses a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 rated at 795 hp, comes only with a dual-clutch automatic, and costs roughly $40,000 more.

Is there a Dark Horse SC convertible?

Yes, starting with the 2027 model year. Ford revealed the Dark Horse SC Convertible on August 14, 2026, with the same 795 hp, 660 lb-ft and 7-speed dual-clutch as the coupe. Ford tuned it as a street-focused grand tourer with retuned MagneRide, and calls it the most powerful open-air Mustang it has built. Orders open in fall 2026, with dealer deliveries starting in spring 2027. It starts at $121,490 MSRP, or $126,085 with destination and gas guzzler tax, per Ford’s 2027 price list.

For the full story, read our 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible reveal coverage.

Does the Dark Horse SC come with a manual transmission?

No. The Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch is the only transmission offered.

Is the Dark Horse SC a 2-seater or 4-seater?

A standard SC seats four. Choosing the Track Pack’s rear-seat delete makes it a 2-seater.

How many Dark Horse SC will be made?

Ford has not announced a production cap for the standard Dark Horse SC. The 2026 Track Pack Special Edition was a limited run, but Ford has not published a number, and it is not offered for 2027. We will update this page when production figures are confirmed.

What about the 2027 Dark Horse SC?

We cover 2027 Mustang ordering changes in our 2027 Mustang order guide and 2027 Dark Horse order guide.

For SC-specific changes, see our 2027 Dark Horse SC order guide. It covers the new convertible, two added colors, the loss of Oxford White and the removal of the Track Pack Special Edition for 2027.
