Designed by Ford’s Living Legends studio, the GT-R was intended to showcase the Mustang’s racing heritage and future possibilities on the track. It was not a street-legal vehicle but a purpose-built race car highlighting what the Mustang could achieve with the right engineering and vision.

The concept drew its inspiration from the original 1969 Mustang Boss 302 Trans-Am race car, an icon in American motorsports. Ford’s objective was clear: to create a modern interpretation of the Mustang’s racing legacy while integrating cutting-edge technology and design.

The Mustang GT-R concept was built on the then-new S197 Mustang platform, which itself was a significant departure from previous models, offering better handling and a stiffer chassis. The GT-R, however, took this platform to an entirely new level with a focus on performance and aerodynamics.

The exterior design was aggressive and unmistakable. The bright Valencia Orange paint was a nod to the competition-oriented nature of the car, complemented by carbon fiber accents and a wide, muscular stance. The front fascia featured a prominent grille and air intakes, while the rear was dominated by a massive spoiler and diffuser, all of which contributed to its aerodynamic efficiency and race-ready aesthetics.

Under the hood, the GT-R concept was powered by a 5.0-liter “Cammer” V8 engine, a nod to the high-performance engines of the past but with modern advancements. This engine was capable of producing 440 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, showcasing Ford’s engineering prowess. The engine was paired with a six-speed manual transmission, reinforcing its racing credentials.

The suspension system was also heavily modified for track performance. It featured a fully independent setup with adjustable dampers and a lower ride height, ensuring that the GT-R could handle the rigors of racing with precision and agility. Brembo brakes and lightweight racing wheels further enhanced its performance capabilities.
