The 20 Most Common Mustang Check Engine Light Codes
Most Mustang check engine lights come down to about twenty codes.
Not twenty problems. Twenty codes, and the difference matters, because a single code can point to six different causes and the parts store will happily sell you the wrong one. The whole purpose of this list is to get you from “here’s the number on my scanner” to “here’s what I check first,” without spending money on a guess.
Everything here applies to 1996 and newer Mustangs, since that’s the whole OBD-II era. Where a code behaves differently on a specific engine or generation, we say so.
One rule before you start: read freeze frame data before you clear anything. It captures engine speed, load, coolant temperature, and fuel trim at the exact moment the fault occurred, and it often tells you more than the code does. Clear the code and it’s gone forever. 1. P0300, P0301 through P0308: Misfire
What it means. The PCM watches crankshaft speed and detects a momentary slowdown when a cylinder fails to fire properly. P0300 means it found misfires but couldn’t isolate them. P0301 through P0308 name the cylinder.
Cylinder locations on a V8: cylinders 1 through 4 are the passenger side, 5 through 8 are the driver side, numbered front to back. Bank 1 is the passenger side.
Likely causes, in order: spark plug, ignition coil, fuel injector, vacuum leak, low compression, fuel delivery problem.
Where to start. Swap the coil from the misfiring cylinder to a healthy one and clear the code. If the misfire follows the coil, you’re done diagnosing. This costs nothing and eliminates the single most common wrong guess. Do the same with plugs if the coil swap doesn’t move it.
Then pull the plug and read it. Oil on the threads and darkened porcelain suggests oil consumption. Fuel-soaked suggests injector or ignition.
What people get wrong. Replacing all eight coils and plugs at the first misfire. Sometimes that’s the right call on a high-mileage car you were going to service anyway, but it’s not diagnosis, and if the cause is an injector or a compression problem you’ve spent the money for nothing.
Stop driving if the light is flashing. A flashing MIL means the misfire is severe enough to dump raw fuel into the exhaust and destroy the catalytic converter within minutes.
2. P0316: Misfire Detected on Startup
What it means. Misfire detected within the first 1,000 engine revolutions after start. This is the cold start misfire code.
Why it’s useful. P0316 by itself is a timing clue. Paired with a cylinder-specific code, it tells you the problem happens cold and may clear up once warm, which points you away from things that fail consistently and toward things that behave differently at temperature: fuel delivery on a cold start, a weak coil that works once warm, oil pooling on a plug overnight.
On Gen 3 Coyotes (2018-2023) specifically, P0316 shows up frequently alongside oil consumption issues. Check oil level and condition before anything else.
Where to start. Freeze frame to confirm coolant temperature at the time of the fault, then plugs on the named cylinder.
3. P0420 and P0430: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
What it means. The PCM compares the upstream and downstream oxygen sensor signals. If the downstream sensor starts mirroring the upstream one, it concludes the converter isn’t doing its job. P0420 is Bank 1, P0430 is Bank 2.
This is the most misdiagnosed code on the list, because the code says “catalyst” and people buy a catalytic converter.
Likely causes, in order:
- Exhaust leak upstream of a sensor, letting outside air skew the reading
- EVAP purge valve stuck open, throwing off fuel delivery enough to trip the monitor
- A failing oxygen sensor reporting inaccurately
- Engine problems that killed the converter, most often a long-ignored misfire
- The converter itself, genuinely degraded
On a modified car, this is usually not a fault at all. High flow catalytic converters convert less than the factory units and the monitor reports the difference accurately. Nothing is broken.
Where to start. Check for exhaust leaks. Then look at Mode $06 data, which shows the actual measured test values against the pass/fail threshold rather than just the result. A converter that’s marginal reads differently than one that’s dead.
What people get wrong. Buying a converter before ruling out the leak, the purge valve, and the sensors. Also: a P0420 that appeared alongside a misfire code means the misfire came first. Replace the converter without fixing the misfire and you’ll be buying another one.
4. P0171 and P0174: System Too Lean
What it means. Long-term fuel trim has climbed past its limit trying to add fuel. The engine is getting more air than the PCM can account for, or less fuel than it’s asking for. P0171 is Bank 1, P0174 is Bank 2.
The diagnostic shortcut is in the pairing:
- Both banks lean means a common cause upstream of the split: unmetered air entering after the mass airflow sensor, a PCV system fault, a failing MAF, or a fuel supply problem affecting the whole engine.
- One bank lean means that bank’s hardware: an intake gasket, a specific vacuum line, an injector, or an oxygen sensor.
Likely causes: vacuum leak, PCV system fault, dirty or failing MAF sensor, weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, failing injector.
Where to start. A smoke test finds vacuum leaks in minutes and guessing at them can take weeks. If you don’t have access to one, this is worth an hour of shop time.
On EcoBoost cars, add boost leaks to the list. On Gen 3 and Gen 4 Coyotes, remember there are two fuel systems, and a lean condition that only appears in one operating range is telling you which one.
5. P0172 and P0175: System Too Rich
What it means. The opposite. Fuel trim has gone as negative as it can, trying to remove fuel. Too much fuel, or not enough air being measured.
Likely causes: leaking fuel injector, failed fuel pressure regulator, contaminated MAF sensor reading high, restricted air filter, EVAP purge valve stuck open feeding raw vapor into the intake, failing oxygen sensor.
Where to start. The EVAP purge valve is the underrated cause here and it’s cheap to test. After that, MAF cleaning, then fuel pressure testing.
Symptom to watch for: black smoke, fuel smell, poor economy, fouled plugs. If plugs are coming out sooty on multiple cylinders, believe the code.
6. P0442, P0455, P0456: EVAP System Leak
What it means. The evaporative emissions system holds fuel vapor and periodically tests itself for leaks by applying and monitoring pressure or vacuum. These codes mean it found a leak. P0455 is a large leak, P0442 medium, P0456 small.
Check the gas cap first. Every single time. It costs nothing, it’s the most common cause, and it’s the one thing you can rule out in ten seconds. Make sure it clicks. Inspect the seal for cracking.
Likely causes after that: cracked or disconnected EVAP hoses, failed purge valve, failed vent valve, cracked charcoal canister, damaged filler neck, and on older cars a rusted fuel tank seam.
Where to start. Gas cap, then a visual inspection of accessible hoses, then a smoke test. A small leak code, P0456, is essentially impossible to find by eye and needs smoke.
Worth knowing: EVAP codes rarely affect how the car drives. They affect emissions and they will fail an inspection. That’s not a reason to ignore them, but it does mean you’re not stranded.
7. P0443, P0446, P144A, P144C: EVAP Purge and Vent Circuits
What it means. These name the components rather than the leak. P0443 and P0446 are purge and vent control circuit faults. P144A and P144C are Ford codes covering purge system flow and valve function.
Why the purge valve deserves its own entry. A purge valve stuck open causes problems that look like completely unrelated failures. It pulls fuel vapor into the intake at the wrong times, which produces rough idle, stalling, lean codes, rich codes, and catalyst efficiency codes. Owners chase all of those individually while the actual cause is a twenty dollar valve.
On EcoBoost Mustangs, purge codes show up frequently, sometimes after a single episode of hard driving, and sometimes never again.
Where to start. If it appeared once and cleared, note it and watch. If it returns, test the valve rather than replacing it blind. With the electrical connector unplugged, the valve should be closed and hold no flow.
8. P0011, P0014, P0021, P0024: Variable Camshaft Timing
What it means. The camshaft is not in the position the PCM commanded. The phasers that adjust cam timing are hydraulically operated by engine oil pressure.
Check the oil before you check anything else. This is the most important line in this article for Coyote owners. Low oil, degraded oil, or the wrong viscosity means the phasers cannot hold position, and the PCM reports the discrepancy. Being down half a quart is enough on some cars.
On 2018-2020 Gen 3 Coyotes this connects to a documented oil consumption issue, which means the cam timing code may be a symptom of an engine quietly burning oil rather than a hardware fault. Check oil at every fuel fill on those cars.
Likely causes after oil: failed VCT solenoid on the affected bank, timing chain wear, and much less commonly the phaser itself.
What people get wrong. Replacing the camshaft position sensor. The sensor is reporting the situation accurately. It is not the problem.
Reading the code: the number tells you which bank and whether it’s the intake or exhaust cam. Bank 1 is the passenger side.
9. P0340, P0344, P0345, P0349: Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit
What it means. Actual circuit fault with the camshaft position sensor: no signal, intermittent signal, or a signal out of range.
Distinguish this from the VCT codes above. The P0011 family says the cam is in the wrong place. This family says the PCM can’t reliably read where the cam is. Different problem.
Likely causes: the sensor, its connector, wiring damage, oil contamination in the connector, and occasionally a damaged reluctor.
Symptom: hard starting, stalling, no start, rough running.
Where to start. Inspect the connector for oil intrusion, which is common and easy to miss. Then check the wiring for chafing before condemning the sensor.
10. P0335, P0336: Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit
What it means. The PCM has lost or cannot trust the crankshaft position signal, which is the primary reference for both fuel and spark.
Why this one matters more than most. A failing crank sensor causes intermittent no-start and stalling while driving, and it frequently fails when hot and works again when cool. That intermittent character makes it one of the more frustrating faults to catch, and it strands people.
Likely causes: the sensor, wiring, connector, and occasionally a damaged tone ring.
Where to start. If the car stalls when hot and restarts after sitting, this is a strong suspect even without a stored code. Live data showing RPM signal dropout during a stall event is confirmation.
11. P0102, P0103: Mass Air Flow Circuit
What it means. The MAF sensor signal is lower or higher than the expected range. The MAF measures incoming air and everything the PCM does with fuel depends on it.
Likely causes: contaminated sensor element, unmetered air entering after the sensor, a damaged intake tube, wiring or connector faults, and a genuinely failed sensor.
On modified cars this is extremely common. An aftermarket intake changes the tube diameter and airflow characteristics the sensor was calibrated for. If the calibration wasn’t updated to match, MAF codes and associated lean or rich codes follow.
Where to start. Inspect the entire intake tract from the sensor to the throttle body for gaps, cracks, or a loose clamp. Then clean the sensor element with MAF-specific cleaner. Never touch the element.
What people get wrong. Buying a MAF sensor when the actual problem is a hose clamp that was never tightened after an intake install.
12. P0112, P0113: Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit
What it means. IAT signal out of range low or high. The PCM uses intake air temperature to calculate air density, which affects fuel and timing.
Likely causes: the sensor, connector, wiring. Often the sensor is integrated into the MAF assembly.
On 2024 and newer Mustangs, check recall status first. Ford issued recall 26E04, a PCM software update, specifically because the malfunction indicator lamp may fail to illuminate for certain IAT sensor faults. If you have an S650 and see IAT codes, or have a drivability complaint with no codes at all, that recall is directly relevant.
Where to start. Compare IAT to ambient temperature on a cold engine. They should be close. A wildly divergent reading with a normal-looking dash is exactly the scenario the recall exists to address.
13. P0128: Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature
What it means. The engine did not reach expected operating temperature within the expected time.
The cause is almost always a thermostat stuck open. This is one of the few codes where the obvious answer is usually the right one.
Likely causes: thermostat stuck open, low coolant, and less often a coolant temperature sensor reading inaccurately.
Symptom: heater that never gets properly hot, temperature gauge sitting low, worse fuel economy.
Where to start. Check coolant level, then the thermostat. Note that a stuck-open thermostat is not immediately dangerous the way a stuck-closed one is, but running cold hurts economy, increases wear, and prevents some emissions monitors from completing.
14. P0135, P0141, P0155, P0161: Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit
What it means. The heater element inside an oxygen sensor is not drawing the expected current. Oxygen sensors need to reach operating temperature to read accurately, so they heat themselves rather than waiting for exhaust heat.
Which sensor: P0135 is Bank 1 Sensor 1 (upstream, passenger side), P0141 is Bank 1 Sensor 2 (downstream), P0155 is Bank 2 Sensor 1, P0161 is Bank 2 Sensor 2.
This is a circuit code, not a sensor verdict. The fault could be the heater element inside the sensor, the wiring, the connector, the fuse, or the PCM driver. Check the fuse first because it costs nothing.
Where to start. Fuse, then connector condition, then resistance across the heater circuit at the sensor. Only then the sensor.
Common context: these show up in clusters after header installation or exhaust work, often because a connector wasn’t fully seated or a wire got routed against something hot.
15. P0131, P0137, P2195, P2197: Oxygen Sensor Signal
What it means. The sensor’s signal is out of range, stuck, or implausible. P2195 and P2197 specifically mean the signal is stuck lean on the upstream sensor.
Distinguish signal codes from heater codes. Heater codes are electrical. Signal codes mean the sensor is reporting something the PCM doesn’t believe, which could mean the sensor is bad or could mean the sensor is accurately reporting a real problem.
Likely causes: exhaust leak near the sensor pulling in outside air, a genuinely failed sensor, wiring damage, contamination from oil or coolant burning, and an actual fuel mixture problem.
Where to start. Exhaust leaks before sensors. A leak upstream of the sensor introduces oxygen and makes the sensor report lean when the mixture is fine.
16. P0087, P0088: Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low or Too High
What it means. Measured fuel rail pressure is outside commanded range.
On direct injection Mustangs (2018 and newer) this usually points at the high pressure side: the high pressure fuel pump, the camshaft lobe that drives it, or the pressure sensor.
On port injection cars (pre-2018) it points at the in-tank pump, filter, or regulator.
Symptom: power loss under load, hesitation, stalling, hard starting.
Important recall note for 2021-2022 Mustangs: Ford recall 25S75 covers a low pressure fuel pump that may fail, causing engine stall. Warning signs Ford listed include misfiring, rough running, reduced engine power, and a check engine light, with failure more likely at low fuel levels or in hot weather. If you have a 2021 or 2022 and are seeing fuel pressure or misfire codes, check your VIN before spending anything.
Where to start. VIN check, then actual fuel pressure measurement. Do not diagnose fuel pressure from a code alone.
17. P0299: Turbocharger Underboost
What it means. The PCM commanded a boost level and did not get it. EcoBoost Mustangs only.
The instinct is to blame the turbo. It usually isn’t the turbo.
Likely causes, in order:
- Loose or disconnected charge pipe, hot side or cold side. Free to check and the most common cause, especially on cars with aftermarket piping.
- Boost leaks generally: couplers, clamps, cracked plastic piping, intercooler seams
- Wastegate sticking, or carbon buildup on the flap
- Boost control solenoid failed in a position that won’t hold boost
- Blow-off or diverter valve with a torn diaphragm venting continuously
- The turbocharger itself, last
Symptom: noticeable power loss, sometimes limp mode.
Where to start. Physically check every charge pipe connection. People have found this in five minutes after quoting turbo replacements.
18. P0521, P0522: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor
What it means. P0522 is an oil pressure sensor circuit low voltage. P0521 is a range or performance fault.
Treat this as real until proven otherwise. Oil pressure codes are the one category where “clear it and see if it comes back” is the wrong instinct. The downside of a false alarm is an unnecessary sensor. The downside of ignoring a real one is an engine.
Likely causes: the sensor or its connector, wiring, low oil level, degraded oil, oil pump wear, and, on high-mileage or hard-driven engines, actual pressure loss.
Where to start. Check oil level and condition immediately. Then verify with a mechanical gauge rather than trusting the sensor that just reported a fault. A mechanical test settles the question in an hour.
Track and performance context: GT350 owners in particular have an established practice of monitoring oil pressure on track, and pressure drops under sustained cornering or heavy braking are a known discussion point on high-output Mustangs. A pressure event that only appears under load is meaningful data, not a glitch.
19. P0562, P0563 and the U-Code Family: Voltage and Network
What it means. P0562 is system voltage low; P0563 is high. U-codes indicate modules that have lost communication with each other.
Why these are grouped. A weak or failing battery on a modern Mustang produces an astonishing variety of unrelated-looking codes across multiple modules. Low voltage causes modules to behave erratically, drop off the network, and set faults that look like hardware failures.
Load test the battery before you chase anything else. This is the cheapest test in diagnostics and it resolves a surprising number of mystery codes, especially on 2015 and newer cars with many modules.
After the battery: alternator output, ground connections, and the battery monitoring sensor.
When U-codes are real: if voltage checks out and U-codes persist, you’re likely looking at wiring or an actual module fault, which needs wiring diagrams and proper equipment. This is a reasonable place to hand it to a shop.
20. P0741, P1744, and the P0751 through P0772 Family: Transmission
What it means. P0741 and P1744 indicate torque converter clutch performance faults. The P0751 through P0772 range covers shift solenoid performance, and the P2700 series covers clutch application.
If you have a 10R80 ten-speed automatic, check TSB status before any repair. Ford has issued an extensive series of bulletins covering harsh and delayed engagement and shifting on this transmission, listing roughly thirty related codes, attributed to control module software, solenoid strategy, sticking valves in the main control valve body, and axial movement of the CDF clutch cylinder sleeve.
Specific items to look up by year and build date:
- 2018 Mustang built on or before 20-Nov-2017 with P0741 and P1744: addressed under TSB 20-2117, attributed to a sticking torque converter clutch valve
- 2018-2020 Mustang: addressed under TSB 25-2126
- 2021-2022 Mustang built on or before 15-Aug-2022: addressed under TSB 24-2254
- 2025 Mustang: recall 25S19 covers an incorrectly machined valve body causing reverse gear failure or unexpected forward movement, with MIL and wrench light illumination
Why this matters. These bulletins are eligible under warranty provisions. Owners have paid out of pocket for valve body work that was covered. Also note the symptom can appear with or without a check engine light, so a clean scan does not rule it out.
On manual cars: the MT82 in 2015-2023 Mustangs generally fails mechanically rather than electronically. Shift fork failure produces lost gears and grinding with no code at all. Your scanner will not warn you.
Bonus: P1000, the Code That Isn’t a Problem
P1000 means OBD-II monitor testing is not complete. It is a Ford-specific code and it is not a fault.
It appears after the battery has been disconnected, after codes have been cleared, and on cars that haven’t been driven enough for the emissions monitors to run their self-tests. It clears itself once the monitors complete.
Why it’s worth knowing: people see a code, assume something is broken, and start diagnosing. There’s nothing to diagnose. Drive the car normally through a full range of conditions and it goes away.
The catch: if P1000 is present, your car is not ready for an emissions inspection. Monitors take time to set, and the EVAP monitor in particular has narrow enabling conditions and can take days of mixed driving. Do not clear codes or disconnect the battery in the week before an inspection.
How to Use This List Properly
- Record every code, in order, before clearing anything.
- Pull freeze frame on confirmed codes.
- Read multiple codes together. They usually share a root cause. Lean codes on both banks point upstream. A misfire plus a catalyst code means the misfire came first.
- Check recalls and TSBs by VIN at NHTSA.gov and Ford’s owner portal. Several codes on this list have documented, free fixes.
- Test before you buy. The code tells you where to look. The test tells you what’s wrong.
- Fix, clear, and verify with a proper drive cycle.
When to Stop
Take it to a shop when the MIL is flashing, when you have internal module faults in the P06xx family, when you have persistent U-codes after ruling out the battery, when the car is under warranty or has an open field service action, or when you have already replaced two parts and are still guessing.
A diagnostic fee is cheaper than a third wrong part.
